Perhaps you have been looking for some new ways to try cabbage too, and maybe even seeking some ways to get creative with it!
This is a vegetable people don’t tend to use very often because they don’t think there’s much you can create with it besides coleslaw or sauerkraut. Read on, and you will see this is far from the truth. An added bonus is that cabbage is full of vitamin C, fiber, and iodine.
Here are five great ways to cook with cabbage that you might not have considered:
Stuffed Cabbage Rolls:
These are a great option for those nights when you don’t want to eat meat. You can stuff the leaves with rice, beans and onion, covered with pasta sauce and topped with sharp cheddar cheese. Use other fillings for an entirely different meal. Try these delicious cabbage rolls from The Spruce.
Chicken Fajitas with Crunch Lime Cabbage and Avocado:
This is a wonderful recipe using either red or Napa. The flavor will be slightly different depending upon which variety you choose. This recipe contains sliced chicken breast, red bell pepper, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, avocado and cabbage on flour tortillas. This recipe from Epicurious will knock your socks off, and maybe even become a favourite at home.
Beef and Cabbage Casserole:
This is fairly simple to make with some ground round (we tend to use veggie ground round), chopped onion, tomato sauce, tomato juice cocktail, cinnamon, a shot of Tabasco, a large potato (peeled and thinly sliced) and half of a head of cabbage thinly sliced.
Cook and drain the meat then add the seasoning, tomato sauce and tomato juice. Layer half the cabbage and then the potato into the casserole dish. Add half the meat sauce and then the remaining vegetable.
Finish the casserole with the remaining meat sauce. Cover this and bake it for 1 hour 15 minutes. If your family likes cheese, you can top it with cheese. Remove it from the oven and enjoy! You may also want to try this delicious quick and easy version from The Spruce.
Southern Fried Cabbage:
The beauty of Southern Fried Cabbage is that it is super simple to make, as it has just four ingredients. This recipe is one of my faves! Core and shred a small green cabbage. Heat 4 teaspoons of bacon fat in a skillet, toss in the shreddings and stir until it starts to glisten. Lower the heat and add 2 tablespoons of red pepper flakes and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir and cook for about 10 minutes and then serve.
Try some thinly sliced Napa cabbage:
This makes a delicious, healthy soup for colder days or for when you are feeling under the weather. You can add the sliced Napa to miso broth. Toss in some sliced green onions, sliced shiitake or crimini mushrooms, and cubed tofu or your favorite meat. Drizzle the mixture with Asian sesame oil and toss. One of our favourite ways here at home is to enjoy some cabbage in this Egg Roll Bowl recipe. We love our Chinese takeaway, but of course that gets costly. So this recipe is excellent for enjoying the taste of takeaway at home, and with a twist!
Easy Keto Egg Roll in a Bowl

- 1 1/4 lb spicy bulk pork sausage
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 cups green cabbage (shredded)
- 1 medium carrot (shredded)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
- 1/2 tbsp fresh ginger (finely minced)
- 2 tbsp green onions (finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos or tamari
- sea salt and bl. pepper (to taste)
- toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
Heat a large high-sided skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook, breaking the meat into small pieces as it cooks, for approximately 5-6 minutes. Once sausage is no longer pink, remove from heat and carefully drain excess grease from pan.
Safety Tip: Wipe off any excess fat that drips down the side of the pan before returning to burner.Return skillet to heat. Add water and scrape up brown bits from the bottom of the pan with a spatula. Reduce heat to medium and add shredded cabbage, carrots, garlic powder, sesame oil, ginger, and green onions. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste, and cook, stirring frequently, until the cabbage wilts and the carrot softens, approximately 4-5 minutes.
Add rice vinegar and coconut aminos and stir to combine. Cook another 1-2 minutes or until heated through. Remove from heat and transfer to a serving platter or bowl. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, if using, and serve immediately. Enjoy!
