I cannot believe that yesterday was officially National Drink Wine Day in the U.S, and I am only now finding out about this. Granted, I live in Canada, but in all honesty the news we receive does not thin much across borders.
That said, I have also been off of social media for a good while now as I wanted to give myself a good and thorough internet break … and as it so happens, it is via Facebook that I discovered this little treasure of a ‘holy-day’.
In many parts of the world, wine is considered to be a sacred drink, and if not that, then at the very least it is considered a wonderful complement to many meals! I have traveled to Europe many times, and even though I loved wine prior to these journeys, it was really during my travels that I discovered the true beauty of enjoying wine.
It was then that I discovered that wine need not be saved only for ‘special’ occasions.
It was also during my time in Europe that I discovered that in some regions, it is not only considered okay, but it is in fact recommended to pregnant women that they enjoy a glass of wine now and then. Fabulous.
Of course, wine has also saved uplifted many a parent at the end of a very long day. In light of this, please allow me to share with you an experience I had just last week. I documented it and the following is what I shared on Facebook (please note that the names of the children are abbreviated):
For anyone who’s ever wondered, missed, or forgotten what it’s like to dine out with three young children; I invite you to indulge here. You’re welcome.
S: This music is GREAT! (dancing, singing, dancing, singing…)
Me: It is such great music, isn’t it? I love it. (Grooving)
C: Mom… mom… mom…
Me: Yes…
C: Mom… Mom!
Me: Yes, I’ve answered you! Make eye contact please…
C: I have to go to the bathroom.
Me: Okay, let’s go.
C: But are the toilets sensors?
Me: (trying not to hide under the table) …yes…
C: NOOOO!! Those SCARE ME!
S: Just GO, C! WHEEEE… (Spinning)
A: Well the bathrooms here are AWFUL anyway. The taps are all in a big triangle…
Me: What?…
A: …and the water comes out really SLOW. And the soap dispensers don’t work at ALL, you have to practically go up to them and SMACK them…
Me: S, stop spinning and sit down now.
A: … and the toilets DON’T STOP FLUSHING!
C: Agghhh NOOO! I need to go home to the bathroom…
S: C! Just… (Forehead meets table. Mini purple goose egg ensues.)
(Waiter approaches): Would the kids like some soda?
C: What’s soda?
Me: Umm … (Enter a strange mix of pleasure and mom guilt)
Waiter: (smiles) Would mom like a glass of wine?
My new best friend. The waiter, not the wine. And I don’t feel bad saying waiter. That’s how he introduced himself~*
And just for fun, here are a few photos of my mom and I enjoying some fine vino this past Thanksgiving. We somehow managed to make our way through the bottle … but that’s only because we were told that at the bottom of the bottle rest the Secrets of the Universe. Naturally.
Wine has played a role in some very memorable times in my life. Since this post is my Ode to National Drink Wine Day, I feel it is fitting that I go all out and share some more photos in honor and gratitude. May health and merriment be eternally yours. Sending a fine toast to you all!

The one photo that was captured of a Canada Day evening spent by the pond, enjoying a glass of vino.
