Today’s meditation with Osho included a wonderful talk given by him, and a recording of noisy street sounds in which I was to practice listening to these noises in a cheerful manner. It was intriguing to me to notice that the soothing music prior to the recording was becoming a bit much, the street noises suddenly felt momentarily refreshing!
I had to pause and wonder how much of this may have to do with the fact that my mind is now incredibly accustomed to the background sounds of three small children.
Osho says, “Doing is a way of moving out. Non-doing is a way of moving in.”
Being still both physically and mentally means thoughts get louder, emotions get stronger, physical discomfort get more pronounced. Some are afraid of what they might hear or feel. They have lost touch with their inner being.
They feel safer in the outside world, so busy-ness fills the days, and perhaps the nights of non-restful sleep. Meditation is the path to safely moving inward. Remaining in the silence for a few minutes, the thoughts and fears subside. The true self emerges and it is good.
People want to remain occupied. The mind wants something to cling to.

Once the energy stops moving outwards, it starts moving inwards. Meditation happens spontaneously. This is the trick of meditation – how to remain unoccupied. The energy then settles towards the center. Non-doing is a way of moving in, doing is a way of moving out. We make excuses to remain outside, because to come inside looks like coming into a chaos – and it is so.
Inside you have created a chaos, and you have to encounter it and go through it. Courage is needed – courage to be oneself, and the courage to go inside and be meditative. You may be asked, “What is the point of sitting still, and going inwards? There is nothing inside.” It is seen as a sort of boredom to look in.
What is the point of it, you may wonder. Inside, there is darkness, thoughts floating here and there – what will you do with it? Emotions subside, and emptiness comes. Now even thoughts have disappeared. What to do with emptiness?
If you wait even a little longer, then even the darkness disappears.
You feel as if it is night, but if you sit a little bit longer, you begin to see light. Eventually, there is nothing but light. It is a deep awaiting, and patience is needed. There comes a light with no source, no flame is burning, it is simply light as though it is morning.
In that light, for the first time you start understanding who you are. You are that light, you are that twilight. In the beginning, you will feel chaos, but you must pass through it. But only you can pass through it. A master can only help you to pass, he can give you courage, and say “Don’t be afraid, just a few steps more”.
