One of my very favorite things to do, is to map things out and chart them out. On any journey of self-discovery and understanding, these are incredibly valuable tools to have!
Have you ever explored the depths of your own psyche in order to ‘find your why’? By this I mean, uncovering the methods to your madness … particularly in regards to discovering your true passions? Here are some ideas to help get you started:
What interests do you have?
Taking a look at what interests you have outside of work is a great start to finding out what you are passionate about. Think about what you like to do, any hobbies you have, or anything you like to immerse yourself in.
What is the ONE thing you love to do? (if you had to choose!)
Is there a pastime that you continually come to spending your time with? If you have free time, and there is one thing that you always try to squeeze in, then perhaps your subconscious is trying to tell you something.
What do you read about?
If you are an avid reader, what are the topics and genres that you come back to time and time again? If there is any subject that you find yourself particularly devoting your time to, then maybe it is a passion that you hold. Think about the type of books that you cannot put down.
What are you naturally talented at?
Is there anything you are naturally good at already? If you find there is something that comes to you naturally – as an innate ability – without having had any formal training, this may be a calling.
What are my core skills and strengths?
Sometimes ‘finding your why’ doesn’t mean reinventing yourself. Sometimes it means being true to the strengths and skills that you already possess.
When do I feel the greatest sense of value?
Is there anything you do in life currently that gives you a great sense of value or purpose? If there a task or activity that does give you an overwhelming sense of purpose, that is the perfect place to start when finding your why.
What gets you excited?
If there is something in your life that truly gets you excited and motivated then you may have found your passion. If you get so excited about something that it gets you out of bed in the morning, pay attention to that sensation.
