I think we’ve all been there at some point or other – we’ve wondered whether or not to seek out a life coach. You’re wanting to move beyond what you feel may be some kind of plateau, or perhaps you are aware that a much bigger change needs to happen and you don’t have a clue where to start. But what’s easier (and let’s be honest):
Working toward your goals alone through trial and error, or seeking the guidance and direction of someone who’s been there and done that?
The answer here is clear. When you seek the advice of someone who has been through it all before, you can then avoid many of the same mistakes and focus your time and energy on what truly works. That’s the power of a life coach.
Imagine yourself with a set plan and just the right advice. Coaching may shave years off the time it would have taken you to reach your goals otherwise! I am not advocating that anyone ever be in a rush to reach their end goals, because there is beauty in taking the necessary time for things to settle and percolate as you learn.
But sometimes you get stuck in your head, and lose touch momentarily with your own intuition. If you feel you are spinning your wheels and could use some guidance, there is nothing wrong with asking for some sound advice. And oftentimes, it is not the best route to seek advice from close friends or family members as they can be emotionally involved in the choices and changes that you make in your life.
Here are the top 7 reasons why you should consider a life coach:
1. Having a Life Coach Helps Build Confidence
A whole lot of weight is lifted off your shoulders when you know you’re not in this alone. You can let go, and create more space in your mind and heart when know you’re under the guidance of someone supportive and successful. Soon, you will begin to see and understand that your goals are attainable.
2. Your Life Coach Can Help You Create a Guided Plan
Of course you can draft up a plan by yourself, but when you write out your plans with the help of a coach, you know you’re getting an objective point of view and a realistic plan of action. Your coach will be able to have a bird’s eye view of your path, and an investment in your success. Since they have journeyed down this path, they will know some shortcuts and can help you stay focused and accountable.
3. Find More Constructive Methods to Handle Conflicts
Sometimes, you may not even be sure where your conflicts are originating from. Are they internally or externally sourced? It is not always so cut and dry, and certainly not always black-and-white. A life coach can help you find the source of stress and conflict, and can help you cope with tensions. A really good coach will also be able to help you dissolve tension, conflict and stress while providing you tips on how to avoid similar situations in the future.
4. Get the Personal Attention You Deserve
Coaching allows you to get one on one attention so you can be personally guided along your chosen path. You may not be aware of it just yet, but you are probably craving this. It is not easy in this day of mental and emotional overload to carve out the necessary time to take a deep dive inward. When you run into mental roadblocks or emotional struggles, your coach will be there to provide much needed support and suggestions.
5. Discover Effective Ways of Dealing with Challenges
It goes without saying that things will not always go according to plan. And sometimes you may not even be aware of what your plan is, or that you need one in the first place. When you hit a snag, your coach can help you overcome the challenge and guide you back into a clearer direction. You can feel comfortable knowing that you’re receiving supportive guidance and that someone who is aware of your goals and challenges has your back.
6. You Can Find Versatility with Your Life Coach
It can take some tweaking and trial-and-error to find the method(s) that work best for you. Remember that you can decide how you’d like to work with your coach. Do you want help with short-term goals or long-term goals? Perhaps you’d like both. Perhaps you are uncertain, in which case, your coach can be invaluable at helping you determine your requirements for success.
7. Catch a Fresh Breath of Enthusiasm
Your coach likely has a great deal of enthusiasm for their work – as a coach I can attest to this! It’s a job one must truly love in order to have. This enthusiasm will naturally rub off on you. Sometimes it may be difficult to keep up your drive, but thankfully, fuelling others with a solid dose of inspiration is one of the main reasons why coaches exist.
Finding a Coach That’s the Right Fit for You
There are a few tips you should keep in mind when searching for a life coach that will mesh well with your personal style. The first concern is that your coach should have certain credentials and experience. It depends on the field you’re in, but ensure you do your homework to get an idea of who will work best with you. It is important to also uncover your readiness. If you are not quite prepared to go as deep as you can, emotionally and mentally, then you don’t want to start off with a coach that is a natural deep diver.
Communicate with your potential coach and see what his or her communication style is like. One good way to assess the potential relationship is to take note of the questions they ask you. If they ask you questions you haven’t been asked before, or make you think and feel in new and different ways, then you will know this is someone that will take you places. It’s also important to remember that just because a certain coach worked well for your good friend or a neighbor, it does not necessarily mean they will be a good fit for you.
Make sure your coaching sessions will be conducted in a format that you find comfortable. Ask yourself whether you’re the type of person that needs to meet face to face. Nowadays with technology we can communicate and carry on a coaching session in many different ways. Coaching sessions can take place over the phone, email, video conferencing, or in-person.
